Scouting Units in the United Kingdom

The Scouting Structure in the United Kingdom varies substantially from the structure in the United States. It does, however, closely parallel the structure in Canada and Australia (or, if you prefer, the Canadian and Australian structure closely parallels the structure in the United Kingdom).

The United Kingdom has four large scouting areas called Countries. (England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland).

Each of the countries is comprised of Counties, a smaller geographical area.

Each County is comprised of Districts.

Each District is Comprised of Groups.

Each Group is comprised of the various sections: Beavers, Cubs, Scouts.

There are also Explorer scouts, which are supposed to be attached to the District, according to the UK Scouts main page. From my surfing, there are a number of groups that claim Explorer scouts as part of their group. 'Sort of' equivalent to the Venturer programs in Canada and Australia.

There is also a level called the Network. This section is for older youth/young adults 18 to 26. 'Sort of' equivalent to Rovers in the Canadian and Australian program.

Finally, there is a section called Fellowship. This section seems to be reserved for adults who want to provide help in scouting functions, but do not directly work with youth. This section is 'sort of' equivalent to the BP Guilds in Canada, and 'sort of' equivalent to the Geezer/Old Goat Patrol in the US program.

Not every group has all of the sections listed above, for a variety of reasons.

The United Kingdom Scouts number some 400,000, making it a lot larger in terms of membership than Australia and Canada, but a lot less than the US.

This site is a personal site, and is no way whatsoever connected to any 'official' Scouting Organization. Opinions expressed here are solely those of the Retired Scouter. If you don't like the current opinion you can contact me for others, I have plenty. More importantly, I have the time to tell them to you. Information that is downloaded from this site may be used in your program or re-published without asking my permission, I probably glommed it off of somebody else anyways. If you're going re-publish somebody else's information that isn't from this site, you should ask for their permission first. Some links/files may not reflect the current scouting programming in your local area. Camp coffee is an art and very few of us know how to prepare it properly, and no, I won't share.
